Photograph taken at a graveyard outside the town of Ypres in Belgium, showing the grave of an Unknown Soldier of the 1st World War.

During the 1st World War over 550,000 soldiers from all nationalities lost their lives in the fighting in and around Ypres. At 8pm every night the Last Post is sounded at the Mennin Gate (Pronounced Men-In-Gate) to remember those that died fighting to save "little Belgium".

More info on the Mennin Gate can be found with the photograph of the gate.

Heroic, but depressing at the same time. :(

I've recently started reading John Keegan's book on the First World War. Definately one of the most unnecessary conflicts of this past century, and may very well have changed to course of history for the worst.

I agree with the comment regarding the first world war possibly changing history for the worst, however...If the First World War didnt happen, the Second World War might have been along the lines of trench warfare.

It was during the First World War that inventions we take expect the military to have today were first introduced: Tanks, Fighter Aircraft, Chemical Weapon Protection (gas masks or urine soaked tissue over the nose).

Sadly it was also the first war where Chemial Weapons were used to deadly effect by the Germans in Belgium, its amazing how many people were slaughtered around Ypres (spelt Ipres in Belgium) over 500,000 confirmed dead and many more still lying in the place they fell.

The First World War was called The War To End All Wars due to the high death rates, its a shame that nearly 100 years on the current World Leaders still dont realise that there are no winners in war.
